I am often asked which gear I use.

To make it easy, I have compiled my collection and a quick summary.

CAMERAS

The main camera

Canon 5d Mk4: This is my work horse. I use it for almost every job. It’s big, heavy, loud, and aggressive. It weighs more than me with the flash and lens. It’s durable and trusty. It’s a camera that doesn’t fuck around. I have a love hate relationship with it (she could lose some weight and get a little thinner), but everytime I use it I think “Oh yeah - this is why I love DSLR’s more than mirrorless.”
• 24-70 Lens: this is the tank. I’ve had it forever. I’ve dropped it and it survived. I don’t use the lenscap and it’s still unscratched. This thing is crazy. (buy them together to save)
• 100m Macro Lens: I use this very rarely. TBH, I got it on a whim. I was shooting product for a friend and bought it. I have used it a few times since but it mostly sits in my camera bag. • Godox Flash: You can get the canons but why? Godox is just as good.

THE POINT AND SHOOTS

I know some will say “point and shoots aren’t professional!” And those people are probably shitty photographers with shitty style who never get work or sell their images. Point and Shoots are perfect for specific photographers. So chill, relax, and consider something that can fit in your pocket.

Ricoh GR3: A friend had this and wouldn’t stop talking about it. He was a gear head who never stopped talking about his latest gadget, so I ignored him. Then, later, I picked one up. Holy fuck. I use this almost as much as my 5D. It’s slowly replacing that camera.
• $85 Lightpix Labs Flash: OK, this isn’t the most advanced flash. But that is why it’s ok. You can throw it on the Ricoh, or take it off and handhold it.

$450 Olympus Tough TG-6: This is a power camera and most people have no clue it exists since it’s mostly used by dentists and divers. But that is the point of it: it can go underwater (like IN the ocean, under the water 30’!) and has a macro feature where you can bug out on someone’s eye. It’s tough (literally in it’s name) so you can drop it or leave it in the sun and it won’t get fucked up. I’ve even used the video underwater for a music video so… it fucking works.

VIDEO

Canon Vixia hf r800: It’s a toy camcorder. But I used it to shoot Sasha Calle’s music video and I like it. I also like that I can hand this to anyone and they can figure it out.

GoPro: I don’t know if I have the 4 or the 5 or the 6. It doesn’t matter. Now they have the 9, 10, and probably the 11 by the time you read this. I just have one that i occasionally pop out.

SONY AX53: OK, I don’t own this but I rent it for shoots often. Why? It has a built in gimbal and I like the style. It also has night vision.

ACCESSORIES

Nobody talks about accessories but there are some that are necessary

Peak Design straps: you need these if you want to get better at shooting. Actually, you don’t need THESE, but you need a good strap. The straps that come with the cameras all suck balls. You want a strap that fits your body. Also, you don’t need one strap for every camera, just one strap for your heavy cameras and one for your lighter cams. The Peak Design are hella fast interchangeable straps so you can literally add/remove a strap in less than 8 seconds.

Think Tank Airport: I’ve owned a lot of camera bags. You really just need one fatty that holds all your EQ and is easy to travel with. That is this one. This fits under the seats and over your head in the carry on. It’s light, east, and can handle getting beaten up.

This power brick: Everyone has that daisy chain of power strips. And once you plug in one device, it blocks the neighboring power socket. Not with this. you can arrange it to plug in your mess of cords. It even has some USB slots.

Car chargers and Spares: You’ll forget to charge your batteries because you’re a human and humans are stupid. I forget all the time. So I just have chargers in my car and charge spares. Tip: The Ricoh and the TG-6 take identical batteries so I just use them in a pinch. I am brains! Here are the batteries for the Canon, the Oly, the Ricoh, and their chargers. You also want to get Eneloop batteries because they are just better.

External Hard drive: Buy one, use it for two years. Then back up on another. I haven’t had trouble with either these or these.
